{"id":8276,"date":"2018-10-19T16:37:38","date_gmt":"2018-10-19T20:37:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=8276"},"modified":"2018-10-29T11:38:43","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T15:38:43","slug":"mobile-hotspots-help-students-connect-at-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/mobile-hotspots-help-students-connect-at-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Mobile hotspots help students connect at home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Virginia Beach City Public Schools\u2019 (VBCPS) Title I and Title IV programs have partnered together and used grant funds to provide 132 families reliable internet access through free mobile hotspots<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re focused on developing technology-rich lessons as part of the division\u2019s strategic plan,\u201d said Cristina Alsop, director of Title I programs. \u201cUsing digital learning, students can collaborate on documents and communicate with their teachers in and out of the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Kajeet SmartSpot mobile hotspots will help digital equity across the division and allow students unable to afford dependable internet to have equal access needed for completing homework, communicating with teachers and applying for jobs, scholarships or college.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Alsop hopes the hotspots will equally engage parents who will have the ability to check student grades and keep up with school activities and assignments using Parent Portal, Schoology and other online educational resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we become an increasingly digital society, both parents and students really need to be familiar with today\u2019s tools to be a full participant,\u201d said Alsop.<\/p>\n<p>The hotspots will not only ensure families are able to access the web, but access it safely.<\/p>\n<p>The Kajeet devices\u2019 education-only filtering technology will work in conjunction with, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/vbcps-partners-with-securly-to-improve-student-safety-online\/\">Securly Parent Portal<\/a>, a web-filtering tool the division added once accomplishing the 1:1 initiative. The 1:1 initiative provides each student with a Chromebook or laptop, but if the student\u2019s home doesn\u2019t have access to reliable internet the students may not be able to complete the designated assignments, said Robinson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery student in the division has access to computers at school, and students in fifth through grade 12 can bring their devices home,\u201d said Alsop. \u201cThe hotspots paired with school laptops give students online access outside school hours for homework.
