{"id":8211,"date":"2018-09-27T11:57:23","date_gmt":"2018-09-27T15:57:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=8211"},"modified":"2018-11-05T16:03:27","modified_gmt":"2018-11-05T21:03:27","slug":"middle-school-student-selected-to-attend-national-stem-camp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/middle-school-student-selected-to-attend-national-stem-camp\/","title":{"rendered":"Middle school student selected to attend national STEM camp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It isn\u2019t every day that a 13-year-old student finds herself studying and conducting college-level experiments, but that\u2019s exactly what Joy Preston, found herself doing this summer.<\/p>\n<p>Preston was one of 30 middle school students worldwide selected to attend the Joint Science and Technology Institute (JSTI), a program that provides students the opportunity to complete science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) challenges and projects. According to the institute\u2019s website, the program \u201cenables students to work with real-world scientists and increase student awareness of career opportunities in STEM-related fields.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/picture1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8208 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/picture1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/picture1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/picture1-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/picture1-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/picture1-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For Preston, the camp further increased her desire to go into the healthcare field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really enjoy science, so I was really excited when I found out I was chosen to go,\u201d said Preston. \u201cI really want to be a nurse when I grow up and work with children who have cancer, so science is a really important subject to study.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each day students work in their assigned groups on a number of projects. Preston was assigned to the forensic chemistry project group and learned how to identify unknown substances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe took different chemicals and put them over fire to see what color the flame turned. Based on what color the flame turned we could know what chemical it was,\u201d explained Preston.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/picture2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8209 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/picture2-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/picture2-1024x684.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/picture2-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/picture2-768x513.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/picture2-400x267.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/picture2.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>JSTI\u2019s other project groups include robotics, 3D printing, videography and engineering drones.
