{"id":7997,"date":"2018-06-28T15:42:45","date_gmt":"2018-06-28T19:42:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=7997"},"modified":"2018-07-09T12:05:35","modified_gmt":"2018-07-09T16:05:35","slug":"girl-scout-troop-174-establishes-kindness-rock-garden-at-kellam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/girl-scout-troop-174-establishes-kindness-rock-garden-at-kellam\/","title":{"rendered":"Girl Scout Troop 174 establishes Kindness Rock Garden at Kellam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Shelby Galley and her fellow Cadettes in Girl Scout Troop 174 have been doing a lot of thinking about kindness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need kindness or else this world would kind of be a rough place,\u201d said Galley, a rising eighth-grader at Princess Anne Middle School (PAMS). \u201cYou need something to look forward to in life and finding something happy like somebody saying hello or just somebody being polite \u2013 you need that person in your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And for those times when a kind person may not be near when someone needs it the most, the Cadettes hope students will find a smile in the Kindness Rock Garden they created for Kellam High School.<\/p>\n<p>Installed in the school\u2019s courtyard, a handmade wooden bench covered in inspirational messages provides a place to sit and 150 hand-painted rocks share equally thoughtful messages to passersby.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Photo-1-Kindness-Garden.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7991 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Photo-1-Kindness-Garden-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Photo-1-Kindness-Garden-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Photo-1-Kindness-Garden-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Photo-1-Kindness-Garden-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Photo-1-Kindness-Garden-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Galley and four other rising eighth-graders in Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) \u2013 Bella Marissa DeSimas, Salem Middle School; Miranda Glover, Old Donation School; Bella Sandelier, PAMS; and Lilly Vidrine, PAMS \u2013 proposed the idea this past winter to Kelsey Seibert, Kellam\u2019s school counseling department chairperson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey contacted me and asked for a meeting. They had a presentation, a portfolio and pictures of what they wanted to do,\u201d Seibert recalled. \u201cThey knew they wanted to do a kindness garden and leave a legacy. And I like that a high school has a kindness garden. You see a lot of elementary schools have them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group worked for months on the project that would earn them the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award Cadettes can earn. Even more important to the girls is the positive impact they hope the garden will have on others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to do this because we know how kindness \u2013 if it\u2019s spread \u2013 really helps,\u201d explained Galley. \u201cI know, including me, I get sad and we all felt like if you see a cool rock or something that tells you, \u2018Hey, you can do it,\u2019 then it would make you feel better throughout the day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before a brief ceremony June 28 to reveal the Kindness Rock Garden to family members, community partners and Kellam staff, the five students took time to place each rock by hand in the courtyard.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Photo-2-Kindness-Garden.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7992 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Photo-2-Kindness-Garden-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Photo-2-Kindness-Garden-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Photo-2-Kindness-Garden-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Photo-2-Kindness-Garden-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Photo-2-Kindness-Garden-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like that we got to be creative with our rocks,\u201d said Glover, \u201cand it\u2019s really satisfying to look at our artistic accomplishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For one of the rocks she painted, DeSimas was inspired by a song in the Broadway musical \u201cDear Evan Hansen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are these four or five people in high school and something tragic happened to them. We are all the same kind of different. Be kind. You matter. Hello sunshine. Actions speak louder than words. Sandelier even created instructions to leave behind which share decoration ideas and how to seal the decorated rocks to protect their designs from inclement weather.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so people can add their own kindness so the movement can pretty much keep growing and keep spreading,\u201d Sandelier said.<\/p>\n<p>That is exactly what Seibert expects will happen when Kellam students return in September.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re really lucky that we were your chosen site,\u201d Seibert said at the ceremony. \u201cI promise, on behalf of Kellam, that we will do our part to take care of it and to respect it and to encourage our students to spend time here and to keep this going. This is a legacy that you\u2019ve already started before you\u2019ve even gotten to attend Kellam. But now that I see it, it\u2019s awesome. I really like it. I\u2019m very happy.
