They programmed robots to support manufacturing. They defended against cyber security threats.<\/p>\n<p>And they did it all at the 10<sup>th<\/sup> annual STEM Trifecta hosted by Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) at the Virginia Beach Convention Center June 7. The event, coordinated by the VBCPS Office of Technical and Career Education, is the culmination of a yearlong initiative that engages students in grades K-12 in afterschool science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) activities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Photo-1-STEM-Trifecta.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7917 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Photo-1-STEM-Trifecta-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Photo-1-STEM-Trifecta-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Photo-1-STEM-Trifecta-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Photo-1-STEM-Trifecta-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Photo-1-STEM-Trifecta-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More than 1,000 students from 71 schools participated, working together in teams to compete in one of three Trifecta events: Robotics Challenge, Maker Challenge and Cyber Security Challenge. Awards were presented to elementary, middle and high school teams in each area of competition.<\/p>\n<p>The Robotics Challenge featured an advanced manufacturing theme. Students had to control robots they designed, built and programmed to transport, sort and package manufactured parts.
