{"id":7227,"date":"2017-12-14T10:55:19","date_gmt":"2017-12-14T15:55:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=7227"},"modified":"2017-12-27T09:32:47","modified_gmt":"2017-12-27T14:32:47","slug":"education-symposium-held-help-address-military-students-needs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/education-symposium-held-help-address-military-students-needs\/","title":{"rendered":"Education symposium held to help address military students\u2019 needs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By the time Kris was ready to start the seventh grade at Plaza Middle School, it was the 10<sup>th<\/sup> school he attended.<\/p>\n<p>Eighth-grader Aly had been in five different schools throughout her educational career, and high school junior Julian is on his eighth school.<\/p>\n<p>All three are children in military families, and they were able to share their experiences as part of a student panel at the education symposium, \u201cSupporting Military-Connected Students: Resources to Guide Successful School Transitions.\u201d The event was hosted by Military School Liaison Officers and the Virginia Department of Education and brought together school counselors from divisions across the state to learn more about meeting the unique needs of military children.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2339.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7229\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2339.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"5184\" height=\"3456\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2339.jpg 5184w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2339-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2339-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2339-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2339-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 5184px) 100vw, 5184px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kris, Aly and Julian are all Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) students, and shared openly about some of the struggles that come with being a military child.<\/p>\n<p>They said the constant moving, the stress of deployment and having to routinely say goodbye to friends were all very difficult. Combined with those obstacles is the fact that school divisions in different parts of the country have different curriculums, standards and procedures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the hardest part is having to learn new things because you\u2019re not exactly learning the same things,\u201d Kris said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way California teaches math isn\u2019t the way Virginia teaches math,\u201d Aly added. \u201cSo, it\u2019s going to be harder for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2356.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7230\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2356.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;&quot;\" width=\"5184\" height=\"3456\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2356.jpg 5184w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2356-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2356-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2356-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_2356-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 5184px) 100vw, 5184px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The student panel was just one part of the symposium. First lady of Virginia Dorothy McAuliffe spoke with the counselors directly, and thanked them for helping to ensure military families have as smooth as transition as possible when moving to the Commonwealth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour work here today has helped strengthen the work we are doing in Richmond and what has already been done,\u201d McAuliffe said. \u201cWhether you know it or not, you make an incredible impact on the lives and families you serve\u2026Looking ahead, we know there is still more work to do, there always is.
