{"id":7076,"date":"2017-10-22T20:43:49","date_gmt":"2017-10-23T00:43:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=7076"},"modified":"2017-10-29T21:40:00","modified_gmt":"2017-10-30T01:40:00","slug":"new-microsite-helps-families-navigate-k-12-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/new-microsite-helps-families-navigate-k-12-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"New microsite helps families navigate K-12 experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Getting an overview of what students study in a particular grade level is now only a click away thanks to the school division\u2019s new microsite, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbschools.com\/compass\/DestinationGraduation\/ElementaryYears\/Kindergarten\/index.asp\">Destination Graduation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Each section of the site, which is organized by grade level, contains an overview of what students will study as well as assessments given and links to services and resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis interactive resource was developed solely with our students and families in mind,\u201d said Dr. Aaron Spence, Virginia Beach City Public Schools superintendent. \u201cWe hope this site will help aid them in learning what to expect at each grade level and how they can maximize their school experience with us by accessing a multitude of division resources and programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbschools.com\/compass\/DestinationGraduation\/index.asp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7077 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Destination-Graduation-picture.jpg\" alt=\"&quot; &quot;\" width=\"650\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Destination-Graduation-picture.jpg 650w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Destination-Graduation-picture-300x162.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Destination-Graduation-picture-400x215.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition to obtaining grade-level specific information, getting a glimpse into the future is exactly why the site was designed, according to Lisa Banicky, the school division\u2019s director of innovation and strategic planning, who led the site\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the things that we have heard from our community is that they wish they had known about some things sooner \u2013 whether that something was a requirement for an academy or some other specialty program,\u201d she said. \u201cThis site really helps you begin thinking longer than the next semester, the next grade level, or the next year\u2019s courses. It helps visitors \u2013 students and families \u2013 really begin to think about planning ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Banicky also said that the site connects visitors directly to resources that have more in-depth information about particular programs offered by the school division or the city of Virginia Beach.<\/p>\n<p>A good example of those resources is the \u201cStart Strong\u201d section which provides helpful information to prepare students to get a good start going into their kindergarten years.<\/p>\n<p>Destination Graduation also links to the school division\u2019s recently launched <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbschools.com\/curriculum\/academic\/index.asp\">Academic and Career Planning microsite<\/a>, which is helpful to secondary students as they plan their post-graduation plans, as well as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbschools.com\/compass\/2020\/landing.asp#Profile\">VBCPS Graduate Profile<\/a>, a set of eight attributes that the school division believes are critical for students to be ready for their future after high school.<\/p>\n<p>The site will continue to evolve, according to Banicky.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to make sure that we are pointing people to resources so that they can maximize their time with us and achieve their future endeavors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The site was launched at the school division\u2019s Oct. 12 \u201cNavigating the Journey\u201d resource fair for families.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Getting an overview of what students study in a particular grade level is now only a click away thanks to the school division\u2019s new microsite, Destination Graduation.
