{"id":6811,"date":"2017-06-27T09:58:42","date_gmt":"2017-06-27T13:58:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=6811"},"modified":"2017-07-06T22:11:43","modified_gmt":"2017-07-07T02:11:43","slug":"partnership-becomes-monster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/partnership-becomes-monster\/","title":{"rendered":"When a partnership becomes a monster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are countless partnerships and collaborations across the division, but one between Princess Anne Middle School (PAMS) and Princess Anne Elementary School (PAES) is not just big, it\u2019s a monster undertaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the second year, our kindergarten class has partnered with Ian Jewell\u2019s eighth-grade art students as we work to bring words and picture to life,\u201d said PAES kindergarten teacher Amy Ellison. \u201cIn the third marking period, our kindergartners focus on adding adjectives to their writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6812\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_9051-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_9051-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_9051-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_9051-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_9051-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Students show off their descriptive skills\u00a0by imagining and creating a scary or despicable or ferocious \u00a0monster. Then, they draw a picture of their frightening, creepy or slimy creations. The drawings are then given to PAMS art teacher Ian Jewell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is one of my favorite projects of the year,\u201d said Jewell. \u201cI challenge my eighth-grade art students to create a 3-D representation of a monster that has been designed by a 5-year-old. When I first describe the project, my class erupts in excitement. They can\u2019t wait to see what the little ones have come up with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For several class sessions, Jewell\u2019s art room is transformed into a monster building factory. Using felt, thread buttons and stuffing, plenty of stuffing, the students, not unlike fiction\u2019s Dr. Frankenstein, bring the monsters to life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of the hard work of our eighth-grade partners,\u201d Ellison added, \u201cour students begin to grasp how describing words can bring a story to life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_9055-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_9055-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As the school year draws to a close, Jewell packs the stuffed creatures into his monster-mobile and delivers them to Ellison\u2019s students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is nothing more powerful than having the character in your story surprise you by showing up in your class,\u201d she said. \u201cWe love seeing how much care the eighth-grade students put into making sure that their monsters match the kindergartner\u2019s pictures and writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For Jewell, seeing the expressions on the students faces when their monsters are revealed, makes the project most worthwhile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI
