{"id":6734,"date":"2017-06-01T08:00:17","date_gmt":"2017-06-01T12:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=6734"},"modified":"2017-06-09T15:27:56","modified_gmt":"2017-06-09T19:27:56","slug":"second-grader-launches-youtube-channel-help-others","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/second-grader-launches-youtube-channel-help-others\/","title":{"rendered":"Second-grader launches YouTube channel to help others"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>His online name is \u201cSpeech Jumper,\u201d but second-grader Harvey Coots didn\u2019t launch his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TxxvTa5g5HQ\">YouTube series<\/a> two weeks ago seeking fame, he did it for a more noble reason.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just wanted to make a difference and make people happy,\u201d said the Tallwood Elementary School student.<\/p>\n<p>His YouTube reading series, which launched May 16, is dedicated to helping people with \u201cbumpy speech\u201d as he describes it. In each episode, he plans to read a different chapter of E.B. White\u2019s <em>Stuart Little<\/em> children\u2019s book and provide subscribers strategies to help with speech challenges.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6735\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"980\" height=\"632\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-1.jpg 980w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-1-300x193.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-1-768x495.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-1-400x258.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike when you\u2019re saying something, don\u2019t press your lips too hard which can make you tense and then makes you stutter,\u201d he said describing one strategy. \u201cTouch your lips very softly and words will come out smoothly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He learned this strategy from Debra \u201cD.A.K.\u201d Edwards, his speech language pathologist at Tallwood, who describes Coots as a very motivated student who is a perfect example of a student being raised in a digital environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarvey has a natural enthusiasm for learning but he also has a high interest in technology,\u201d Edwards describes. \u201cSo I took his interests and together we started learning some of the apps that we have available here at school to use during our speech therapy sessions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6736\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2592\" height=\"1728\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-2.jpg 2592w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-2-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-2-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-2-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2592px) 100vw, 2592px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Using technology, Edwards says, is really encouraged at Tallwood, which is one of the school division\u2019s 15 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbschools.com\/curriculum\/digitallearning\/\">Digital Learning Anchor Schools<\/a>, an initiative prompted by the adoption of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbschools.com\/compass\/2020\/landing.asp\"><em>Compass to 2020<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Coots brings his laptop to each session and uses it to record digital journals of his speech progress. In one video, Coots practices his speech by reading sentences from Fluency River flash cards, an educational program which use components of a river to provide elementary students easy-to-remember speech tips. One such tip is \u201clily pad pauses,\u201d a strategy which prompts the reader to pause briefly between words and rest just like frogs wait on lily pads so they don\u2019t they fall into the water; or, as the strategy card states, \u201cif one talks too fast, one will make a splash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6737\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2592\" height=\"1728\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-3.jpg 2592w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-3-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-3-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Speech-Jumper-Picture-3-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2592px) 100vw, 2592px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Edwards says that the digital journal is a great communication tool with parents.<\/p>\n<p>She is able to not only record Coots\u2019 growth throughout the year, but also send push notifications which his mother is able to access and see her child\u2019s progress in action.<\/p>\n<p>Coots\u2019 mother Jayne Coots is not only proud of the progress but more importantly that her child feels \u201cempowered to help others and use the technology and strategies that he learned at Tallwood Elementary,\u201d she said. \u201cIt showed me just how confident he\u2019s truly becoming.
