{"id":6145,"date":"2017-03-14T11:20:29","date_gmt":"2017-03-14T15:20:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=6145"},"modified":"2017-03-21T11:25:52","modified_gmt":"2017-03-21T15:25:52","slug":"vbcps-student-among-finalists-nasa-art-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/vbcps-student-among-finalists-nasa-art-contest\/","title":{"rendered":"VBCPS student among finalists for NASA art contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Story Update: On March 21, NASA announced the voting results <a href=\"https:\/\/artcontest.larc.nasa.gov\/\">online<\/a>\u00a0and Alaura Knoop was\u00a0named\u00a0the 2017 Grand Prize Runner-Up in its Centennial Student Art Contest.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>NASA Langley Research Center is asking the nation to choose the grand prize winner in its Centennial Student Art Contest.<\/p>\n<p>Gifted visual arts student Alaura Knoop, an eighth-grader at Virginia Beach Middle School, is hoping the public will cast its votes for her entry depicting the contest theme, \u201cA Storied Legacy, A Soaring Future.\u201d Online voting takes place at <a href=\"https:\/\/artcontest.larc.nasa.gov\/\">https:\/\/artcontest.larc.nasa.gov\/<\/a> until 11:59 p.m. EDT March 20.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alaura-Knoop-Artwork.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6146\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alaura-Knoop-Artwork.jpg\" alt=\"Alaura Knoop Artwork\" width=\"6000\" height=\"4000\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alaura-Knoop-Artwork.jpg 6000w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alaura-Knoop-Artwork-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alaura-Knoop-Artwork-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alaura-Knoop-Artwork-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alaura-Knoop-Artwork-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 6000px) 100vw, 6000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Space exploration is more than just a theme for Knoop. It\u2019s her \u201cone true passion,\u201d according to the artist statement she wrote about the acrylic painting.<\/p>\n<p>Dressed in an outer space-themed skirt, Knoop explained her preparation of the piece\u00a0that celebrates NASA Langley\u2019s 100<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did some research for the \u2018storied legacy\u2019 aspect and I put that in the background,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She included the Mercury spacecraft flying across the sky to symbolize Langley\u2019s part in the missions. In the corner looms the planet Mars to show \u201cthe work Langley has done and continues to do to study this mysterious planet,\u201d Knoop wrote in her artist statement.<\/p>\n<p>A launching NASA space shuttle and a lunar lander are also painted in the background.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I did an astronaut in the foreground because NASA Langley does a lot with astronaut training,\u201d Knoop said. \u201cThe visor is the futuristic piece because of a \u2018storied future.\u2019 I painted alternate energy sources and new spacecraft on the helmet to show a reflection of the future. The astronaut is looking out into the future and behind the astronaut is the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What does the future hold for the student artist who loves outer space?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alaura-Knoop-photo-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6147\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alaura-Knoop-photo-1.jpg\" alt=\"Alaura Knoop photo 1\" width=\"3456\" height=\"2304\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alaura-Knoop-photo-1.jpg 3456w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alaura-Knoop-photo-1-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alaura-Knoop-photo-1-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alaura-Knoop-photo-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alaura-Knoop-photo-1-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3456px) 100vw, 3456px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Continuing her year-round practices with Tide Swimming, another passion, and enrolling in the Mathematics and Science Academy at Ocean Lakes High School next school year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen probably something with astronomy,\u201d said Knoop.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s also excited about what\u2019s next for NASA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNASA Langley Research Center has made amazing and inspiring discoveries and my aim was to show these all of these in my artwork,\u201d she wrote in her statement. \u201cI can\u2019t wait to see what the future holds in space exploration!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To view all of the grade-level winners and their artwork, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/artcontest.larc.nasa.gov\/\">https:\/\/artcontest.larc.nasa.gov\/<\/a>.
