{"id":6125,"date":"2017-03-07T13:33:24","date_gmt":"2017-03-07T18:33:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=6125"},"modified":"2017-03-14T11:22:09","modified_gmt":"2017-03-14T15:22:09","slug":"students-make-big-impression-sculptures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/students-make-big-impression-sculptures\/","title":{"rendered":"Students make a \u2018big\u2019 impression with sculptures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Step one: Ask students to research the life and accomplishments of famous artists such as Salvador Dali, Georgia O\u2019Keeffe, Vincent van Gogh, Maya Lin, Leonardo da Vinci and Pablo Picasso, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Step two: Add chicken wire, paper strips, glue, cardboard, duct tape and acrylic paint.<\/p>\n<p>What do you get?<\/p>\n<p>The Big Head Art Project\u00a0in which gifted visual arts students at Virginia Beach Middle School (VBMS) created larger-than-life artist heads to wear and then share their research with peers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/DSC04333.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6126\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/DSC04333.jpg\" alt=\"DSC04333\" width=\"3456\" height=\"2592\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/DSC04333.jpg 3456w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/DSC04333-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/DSC04333-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/DSC04333-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/DSC04333-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3456px) 100vw, 3456px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe talked about the big head parades in Spain and Germany and the reason why the art is so big,&#8221; said Jessica Provow, art teacher. &#8220;It\u2019s to have people notice them and really think about what\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t help but notice the walking and talking art in VBMS.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Photo-2-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6127 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Photo-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"Photo 2\" width=\"1366\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Photo-2-1.jpg 1366w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Photo-2-1-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Photo-2-1-768x432.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Photo-2-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Photo-2-1-400x225.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1366px) 100vw, 1366px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe talked about performance art and being able to hear and having a mouth area to speak,\u201d said art teacher Leah Kruger. \u201cSome were more successful with that than others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The students acknowledged there were challenges to completing the sculptures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe forgot parts,\u201d said seventh-grader Ellie Calkin, whose group studied and created Salvador Dali. \u201cWe forgot the ears at one point, and we said, \u2018Oh right, ears.\u2019 So we had to make all that, but I feel like it came together in the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Calkin explained how she and her group members incorporated their research into Dali\u2019s appearance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know how he has the melting clock picture? We put clocks on his mustache to resemble one of his most famous pieces of art,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Photo-3.jpg\"><img details or made little props.<\/p>\n<p>The representation of Vincent Van Gogh is missing a piece of one ear and the head of Deborah Butterfield is covered in sticks to represent her use of stray wood in sculptures.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Photo-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6129\" their students\u2019 research and artwork to a broader audience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re filming them as they perform their plays and we\u2019re going to show them to the entire school on the announcements,\u201d explained Provow. \u201cThen the entire school, during Youth Art Month, gets a taste of art and art history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a bold statement for all to see, the creation process left a lasting impression on the student artists as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI liked working together and having a bunch of people\u2019s perspectives,\u201d reflected Calkin. \u201cYou have all these different ideas going into one thing and it makes it 10 times better.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Step
