{"id":4972,"date":"2016-03-22T18:48:22","date_gmt":"2016-03-22T22:48:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=4972"},"modified":"2016-03-23T19:03:12","modified_gmt":"2016-03-23T23:03:12","slug":"bayside-pi-night-serves-up-math-lessons-for-the-whole-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/bayside-pi-night-serves-up-math-lessons-for-the-whole-family\/","title":{"rendered":"Bayside Pi Night serves up math lessons for the whole family"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The real math of the night began before the event even started.<\/p>\n<p>How many pizzas would it take to feed 600 people?<\/p>\n<p>For the organizers of the Math Pi Night at Bayside High School, the answer was 130.<\/p>\n<p>It was the second year for the event, which brings together students and families from Bayside High School, Bayside Middle School and Bayside 6<sup>th<\/sup> Grade Campus all in one place to learn more about math.<\/p>\n<p>At last year\u2019s event, approximately 500 people showed up, which only led to the excitement for this year. This year, 100 more people joined the math fun for the event.<\/p>\n<p>Families check in together and enjoy a pizza dinner as a family. These lessons ranged from the mathematics in architecture and AP calculus exercises to simple multiplication problems and creating tessellations (or a repeating pattern shape).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4976\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tessa.jpg\" alt=\"tessa\" width=\"1556\" height=\"1037\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tessa.jpg 1556w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tessa-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tessa-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tessa-1024x682.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tessa-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1556px) 100vw, 1556px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For parents like Shahar Ashe-Green, who have children at both Bayside 6 and Bayside High, this event helped bridge the two worlds for her kids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just think it was a good idea and all the schools are doing it together,\u201d she said. Ashe-Green added that she especially liked the opportunity for her younger son to have the opportunity to tour the high school and see where he will be in a just a couple of years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it was very good to have \u2013 with them combining together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If students took the time to work at a station, they would get a sticker for a special passport. Bayside High School students Adia Lawrence and Hailey Calufetti were hosting the probability table. The online game, Cohen pointed out, is competitive and fun, plus you\u2019re learning while you\u2019re playing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want other people to know how to do this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, others will have the chance to learn these kinds of skills as well.
