{"id":4869,"date":"2016-03-02T16:05:50","date_gmt":"2016-03-02T20:05:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=4869"},"modified":"2016-03-08T15:55:43","modified_gmt":"2016-03-08T19:55:43","slug":"landstowns-all-girls-robotics-team-continues-impressive-debut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/landstowns-all-girls-robotics-team-continues-impressive-debut\/","title":{"rendered":"Landstown\u2019s all-girls robotics team continues impressive debut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What a difference two years make.<\/p>\n<p>Two years ago, then-freshman Brielle Almonte noticed she was one of a small number of girls in her robotics class at Landstown High School (LHS).<\/p>\n<p>This year, Landstown in its second year of fielding an award-winning, all-girls robotics team.<\/p>\n<p>Dynamic GEARS (which stands for Girls in Engineering And Robotics) finished in the top seven in state competition after finishing first-place overall in its earlier qualifying competition against 500 middle and high school students.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4873\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_2232.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2232\" width=\"3264\" height=\"2448\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_2232.jpg 3264w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_2232-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_2232-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_2232-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_2232-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3264px) 100vw, 3264px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At state, the LHS girls placed the highest of any all-girls team in the entire competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year, we started going a lot to eighth-grade open houses with the girls and since then our (freshman girl) enrollment in robotics has significantly increased,\u201d said Jennifer Mattice, who serves as a team advisor alongside Landstown\u2019s engineering department chair Jim Barger.<\/p>\n<p>Barger and Mattice advise the four robotics teams from the school\u2019s Governor\u2019s STEM &amp; Technology Academy. The all-girls team evolved over the last two years. Originally, the girls worked together on a co-ed team, Team 5527, while waiting until they were able to complete an all-girls team.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4872\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC_0162.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0162\" width=\"4608\" height=\"3072\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC_0162.jpg 4608w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC_0162-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC_0162-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC_0162-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC_0162-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 4608px) 100vw, 4608px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although Dynamic GEARS is very proud of their all-girls team now, they still enjoy the collaboration with all teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe share robotic parts,\u201d said Dynamic GEARS member Bailey Cake, who is a junior at Landstown. &#8220;Programmers experience the same programming problems and it\u2019s just helpful to help everyone around.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fellow teammate sophomore Haylee Crow agreed, but did add it was easier to \u201ctalk with all girls as opposed to when it\u2019s guys mixed with girls\u201d on the team. She also said they enjoy \u201changing out outside of robotics and bonding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4871\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/0130161024a.jpg\" alt=\"0130161024a\" width=\"4160\" height=\"2340\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/0130161024a.jpg 4160w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/0130161024a-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/0130161024a-768x432.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/0130161024a-1024x576.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/0130161024a-500x281.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 4160px) 100vw, 4160px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That bond is evident as the girls are already planning how to top next year\u2019s competition. This will not be an easy feat since this year they had to build a robot &#8211; who they named \u201cTweaky\u201d- that could be student-operated or run autonomously.<\/p>\n<p>Tweaky earned his name from all of the programming \u201ctweaking\u201d the girls had to make to enable to robot to do a number of operations, including climbing a ramp to reach a hook from which to suspend, picking up and moving various objects to specific marked locations and maneuvering around other competing robots.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about their hopes for next year, Crow said they will take what they learned this year and hopefully expand with more girls picking up the robotic bug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a big learning experience this year and hopefully next year we can continue that with more girls and we can continue learning as people.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What a difference two years make.
