{"id":4117,"date":"2015-08-21T18:01:25","date_gmt":"2015-08-21T22:01:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=4117"},"modified":"2015-08-24T16:38:34","modified_gmt":"2015-08-24T20:38:34","slug":"vbms-staff-greet-students-at-atlantis-neighborhood-community-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/vbms-staff-greet-students-at-atlantis-neighborhood-community-day\/","title":{"rendered":"VBMS staff greet students at Atlantis Neighborhood Community Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Open houses, transition programs and meet-the-teacher nights.<\/p>\n<p>School calendars are filling up with events that invite students and families to the building to prepare for the new school year.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia Beach Middle School (VBMS) administrators and staff recently took their back-to-school efforts into the community to visit current VBMS students and meet future Seahawks at the Atlantis Apartments\u2019 Neighborhood Community Day Aug. 15.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/four-square.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4118\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/four-square.jpg\" alt=\"four square\" width=\"1504\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/four-square.jpg 1504w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/four-square-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/four-square-1024x681.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/four-square-451x300.jpg 451w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1504px) 100vw, 1504px\" \/><\/a>VBMS Principal Sandi Brown explained the rationale for the community outreach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis [was] a great opportunity to build relationships and establish trust,\u201d said Brown, adding that it was a \u201cfun-filled three hours that laid the groundwork for an awesome school year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>VBMS guidance department director Lavell White noted that such outreach helps to \u201cstrengthen student-parent connections and spend time with the families we serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the sunny, Saturday afternoon, VBMS staff played four square and enjoyed lunch with students, parents and other Atlantis Apartments residents. The middle school had its own information table stocked with back-to-school packets and prize giveaways such as VBMS stickers and vouchers for free P.E. uniforms.<\/p>\n<p>When rising eighth-grader Davontae stopped by the neighborhood event, he was greeted with smiles, hugs and high fives from VBMS staff. \u201cLook at you\u201d said Brown enthusiastically. \u201cYou\u2019re so tall! Last year you were as tall as me, and now you are a head taller.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Davontae-and-staff.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4119\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Davontae-and-staff.jpg\" alt=\"Davontae and staff\" width=\"1427\" height=\"947\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Davontae-and-staff.jpg 1427w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Davontae-and-staff-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Davontae-and-staff-1024x680.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Davontae-and-staff-452x300.jpg 452w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1427px) 100vw, 1427px\" \/><\/a>Davontae said he\u2019s excited about the new school year and even more excited about the start of football practice later this month. He and Brown talked about the new football coach, and Davontae visited with other VBMS staff members and students.<\/p>\n<p>Brown hopes the staff\u2019s visit to the neighborhood \u201cwill mean a lot to the students.\u201d Judging by Davontae\u2019s smile while talking to staff, it made a difference to at least one.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Open houses, transition programs and meet-the-teacher nights.
