{"id":3748,"date":"2015-05-17T11:16:09","date_gmt":"2015-05-17T15:16:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=3748"},"modified":"2015-05-18T11:23:59","modified_gmt":"2015-05-18T15:23:59","slug":"odc-students-help-aid-lynnhaven-river-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/odc-students-help-aid-lynnhaven-river-project\/","title":{"rendered":"ODC students help aid Lynnhaven River project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lynnhaven River NOW (LRNow) will be constructing a new one and a half acre sanctuary oyster reef in the Eastern Branch of the Lynnhaven next spring, and it was made possible in part through a partnership with Virginia Beach City Public Schools.<\/p>\n<p>LRNow will be creating the first alternative-substrate oyster reef in the Lynnhaven River. MACSONS and McKenzie Construction are leading the effort to provide material for the sanctuary oyster reef<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first batch of concrete was donated to the reef project when the Old Donation Center (ODC) was demolished in 2014. Donation of this concrete was motivated by third-grade students at ODC, who had been studying oysters and researching alternative materials for reef restoration.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Cole, Sustainability Officer with VBCPS, contacted LRNow and helped to make their idea a reality. Over the next year, LRNow will continue to gather clean concrete for the reef.<\/p>\n<p>The reef will provide critical ecosystem functions such as habitat provision, water filtration, nutrient removal, and shoreline protection in the river.
