In today\u2019s world, children need to know how to be problem solvers. They must learn how to analyze and see things from another point of view.<\/p>\n

This month\u2019s elementary school edition of Parents Make the Difference<\/em> newsletter<\/a> suggests these ways to reinforce your child\u2019s thinking skills:<\/p>\n

  1. Sort things. <\/strong>Find something for your child to sort\u2014buttons, pencils, coins or anything else in your house. Help her sort the items by size. Then mix every\u00adthing up and have her sort them by color. This teaches your child that even though something is part of one group, it can be part of another group, too.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    1. Think about opposites. <\/strong>Suppose you have been talking about fairness. Ask your child, \u201cWhat does fairness <\/em>look like? What things show fairness in action?\u201d Then ask her about the opposite. \u201cWhat does unfairness <\/em>look like?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      1. Talk about points of view. <\/strong>What does your child think your house looks like from a cat\u2019s point of view? What does your child think the school bus driver thinks about the students who ride her bus? This activity will also help your child develop empathy by seeing things from others\u2019 points of view.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
