Therefore, it is befitting that a VBEF grant awarded to support leadership training for students was underwritten by The Tom Wilson Memorial Fund. Wilson passed away in June 2013, and the family asked that memorial donations be made to his favorite organizations, such as the VBEF.<\/p>\n<p>The VBEF Innovative Learning Grant awarded to Independence Middle School (IMS) helped fund its 2015 leadership workshop held at Jamestown 4H Camp Jan. 17-18. More than 50 student delegates attended the overnight, weekend workshop that was planned by a student staff comprised of IMS eighth-graders and students from three different high schools.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3081\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3081\" style=\"width: 584px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Workshop-Delegation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3081\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Workshop-Delegation-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"2015 IMS Leadership Workshop participants at Jamestown 4H Camp.\" width=\"584\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Workshop-Delegation-1024x680.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Workshop-Delegation-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Workshop-Delegation-451x300.jpg 451w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3081\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2015 IMS Leadership Workshop participants at Jamestown 4H Camp.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Chris Felton, IMS student activities coordinator and grant project director, said that a majority of the student staff members from Bayside, First Colonial and Princess Anne high schools attended IMS and went to the middle school\u2019s first leadership workshop four years ago as eighth-graders.<\/p>\n<p>First Colonial High School junior and IMS workshop staff member Aliyah Simmons explained that \u201cleadership workshop helps students\u00a0to function better in school and later in the workforce by providing them with the essential leadership skills needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Decision making, communication, group dynamics and personal responsibility were among the skills and topics covered in instructional sessions. The theme was selected by workshop staff members based on an excerpt by George S. Forest that includes the following lines:<\/p>\n<p><em>The path to wisdom and success is not for the kings alone; it is open to you and me.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>If there are a hundred steps in your path to success and you have not reached it in 99 of them, do not conclude that the journey is a failure.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Press on and up.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The prizes are generally at the end of the effort, not at its beginning.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Felton\u2019s VBEF grant application noted that the number of IMS students becoming involved in clubs and organizations has doubled since the inception of the leadership program. \u201cStudents are motivated and excited to be involved,\u201d he wrote, \u201cand they want to make something happen, as well as see a better legacy being left for those who follow them.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3079\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3079\" style=\"width: 584px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Press-on-and-up.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3079\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Press-on-and-up-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"\u201cPress On and Up\u201d was the IMS workshop theme.\" width=\"584\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Press-on-and-up-1024x680.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Press-on-and-up-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Press-on-and-up-451x300.jpg 451w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3079\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cPress On and Up\u201d was the IMS workshop theme.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe workshop allows them to be their \u2018true\u2019 selves while feeling free to try new exciting activities,\u201d added Felton. \u201cThey often would not step out of their comfort zone without the opportunity of the workshop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stepping out of their comfort zone is what Simmons observed many workshop participants doing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved how outgoing they were,\u201d she said. \u201cAlthough it was a long weekend, they continued to participate with so much energy and they understood the concept of working with others. The team-building activities helped them see just how much you need other people for support, love and encouragement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working together. Love. Support. Encouragement.
