The free workshops are designed to help parents and other relatives become more familiar with computers, software and applications that students are using in class and for homework.<\/p>\n<p>Larkin says that his work with the Parent Connection Technology Academy combines several of his interests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt helps me in two classes,\u201d said Larkin. \u201cIt helps me in my ATC classes because I always learn something new about the programs, but it also helps me in my Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow class because it gives me some actual teaching experience before my internship two months from now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Larkin will shadow current VBCPS teachers as part of his Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow experience, and he likens helping parents at the workshops to the kind of assistance he expects to provide to middle school students this spring.<\/p>\n<p>Houchins describes the Technology Academy workshops as \u201cnecessary,\u201d explaining that \u201cnow parents won\u2019t have to bother other family members about computer programs, and they can show off what they know.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3024\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3024\" style=\"width: 584px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_3331.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3024\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_3331-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"ATC student John Houchins helps a workshop participant with questions.\" width=\"584\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_3331-1024x682.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_3331-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_3331-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3024\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ATC student John Houchins helps a workshop participant with questions.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When asked what comments or questions he hears most often from workshop attendees, Houchins said, \u201cThey frequently just say \u2018thank you\u2019 because they are happy that they learned something new or understand something better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft Word and social media safety were topics of previous Technology Academy sessions this school year.
