In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday last week and in preparation for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Monday, students and staff took part in special lessons remembering King’s influential work.<\/p>\n

Honors English students at Landstown High School took a field trip to view the movie, “Selma” in theaters. In conjunction with their study of Henry David Thoreau’s “Civil Disobedience” and King’s “Letter from the Birmingham Jail,” students\u00a0viewed and made connections to the film, which documents the civil rights movement and the march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.<\/p>\n

Landstown High School students Cyrus Jones, LeAnnda Hamilton, Jame Patterson, Tyler Jones, Kaliah Highsmith, Carmina Angeles, Michole Lim, Diamyn Jones, Rafael Chavez, Jeremy Barclay, and Tyriq Nady went to see the movie Selma in theaters.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Additionally, at Bayside Middle School, Carl Wright, president of the Virginia Beach chapter of the NAACP, visited the school’s Gentleman\u2019s Club to tell students about Black History and the origination of the organization.<\/p>\n

Since his visit fell on Jan. 15, King’s actual birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., Wright also spoke about King\u2019s importance in the fight for civil rights.<\/p>\n
