innovative grant helps students to &#8216;C Straight&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On a cold, dreary afternoon in December, the activity inside the Bayside Sixth-Grade Campus was anything but that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWelcome to C Straight!\u201d counselor Rob Lanz greeted the sixth-grade participants. \u201cCan anyone tell me why you think you were recommended to participate in this program?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo help us get into college,\u201d answered one student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo help my behavior,\u201d responded another student,\u00a0who\u00a0added, \u201cI know I could do better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo have fun!\u201d exclaimed another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are getting together for a lot of different reasons,\u201d Lanz told the group. \u201cMost importantly, you were recommended for this program because someone cares about you and your success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, there were a lots of \u201csomeones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mentors from Virginia Wesleyan College, Bayside High School, First Colonial High School, the Virginia Beach Rotary Club and Bayside Sixth Grade Campus were all on hand to support the students.\u00a0They agreed to volunteer their time throughout the school year to help Lanz and his Bayside colleagues promote the three Cs \u2013 college, careers and community \u2013 for which the C Straight program is named.<\/p>\n<figure students and mentors worked together in several activities.\u00a0Teams took part in a dodgeball match in the gym, and sixth-graders took great delight in competing with and against some of their classroom teachers.\u00a0In the cafeteria, students talked with each other and their new mentors as they designed rubber band loom bracelets.\u00a0The afternoon\u2019s activities concluded with an ice cream sundae celebration that was enjoyed by all.<\/p>\n<p>C Straight volunteer Sydney Covey, a senior at Virginia Wesleyan College and active mentor in the Bayside community, had a surprise reunion with two former mentees at the kickoff event.\u00a0The sisters, now ninth-graders at Bayside High School, are following Covey\u2019s example and serving as mentors for the C Straight Straight is supported by a Virginia Beach Education Foundation (VBEF) Innovative Project Grant that is underwritten by the Community Leadership Partners of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation. Grant directors Lanz and VBCPS social worker Jeneshia Ferebee applied for the grant to help infuse the three Cs of college, careers and community into activities for students in grades five through eight at Bayside Sixth Grade Campus,\u00a0Bayside Middle School and Bettie F.
