{"id":2637,"date":"2014-11-24T15:33:06","date_gmt":"2014-11-24T19:33:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=2637"},"modified":"2015-03-26T14:10:16","modified_gmt":"2015-03-26T18:10:16","slug":"cooke-students-support-school-partners-efforts-end-hunger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/cooke-students-support-school-partners-efforts-end-hunger\/","title":{"rendered":"Cooke students support school partner\u2019s efforts to end hunger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Friday night before Thanksgiving week, volunteers gathered at Virginia Beach United Methodist Church (VBUMC), put on hairnets, helped each other with plastic gloves and then waited patiently for further instructions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u200bHow many of you had breakfast at home or school this morning,\u201d asked Kate Millman, a program manager with Stop Hunger Now and 2005 graduate of Landstown High School.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone raised their hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many of you had lunch at work or school this afternoon?,\u201d Millman asked.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, all volunteers raised their hands.<\/p>\n<p>Millman asked the crowd if they had ever heard the term \u201cchronic hunger\u201d and explained that children in third world countries will go without food for one, two and three days. Cooke first-grade teacher Laura Beth Lawver arranged for the students, who benefit from the church\u2019s \u201cCare by Community\u201d (CBC) partnership with the school, to participate in the meal packing event. She thought it would be the perfect opportunity for CBC students to learn about community service during this season of giving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to find a way to have the CBC kids, who are always on the receiving end, give back and help others,\u201d explained Lawver. \u201cIt is also a way for the school to give back to the church that does so much for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through the CBC partnership, Cooke staff members accompany students to VBUMC every Monday and Wednesday afternoon where church volunteers provide students with a fresh-baked snack, help with homework, join in recreation activities and provide dinner. A VBUMC bus takes the students home each evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe church even bought an extra bus last year so we could accommodate more kids in the CBC program,\u201d added Lawver.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2638\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2638\" style=\"width: 1383px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/2232.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2638\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/2232.jpg\" alt=\"Teamwork! Preschool-age siblings placed vitamin packets in meal bags, and parents held funnels steady while students poured in scoops rice, soy and dehydrated vegetables.
