{"id":2548,"date":"2014-11-05T09:30:42","date_gmt":"2014-11-05T13:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=2548"},"modified":"2015-03-26T14:51:44","modified_gmt":"2015-03-26T18:51:44","slug":"compass-keepers-club-tanner-roughton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/compass-keepers-club-tanner-roughton\/","title":{"rendered":"Compass Keepers Club: Tanner Roughton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For some, being on a state championship winning volleyball team would be enough to hang your proverbial letterman jacket on.<\/p>\n<p>But that is not enough for Tanner Roughton.<\/p>\n<p>For others, taking an active role in the school\u2019s SCA and being a member of several honor societies would, again, be plenty of activity to fill in high school career.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Roughton does not settle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy life is all about diversification,\u201d Roughton said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_6463.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2549\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_6463.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6463\" width=\"1556\" height=\"1037\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_6463.jpg 1556w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_6463-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_6463-1024x682.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_6463-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1556px) 100vw, 1556px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Princess Anne High School junior is a student in the school\u2019s arduous International Baccalaureate program, and in his time there, has been able to maintain his studies and his extracurricular work, including a summer internship with the city\u2019s Department of Economic Development.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, he is currently in the second year of his two-year City Council-appointed term on the Parks and Recreation Commission. There, he helps to lend a student voice and insight into the city\u2019s parks and recreation services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParks and Recreation does some crazy behind-the-scenes stuff to keep the city beautiful, entertained and happy,\u201d Roughton said. \u201cWe\u2019re really lucky to have all the natural resources and human resources (we do)\u2026Virginia Beach is a place a lot of people want to come to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Roughton, seeing first-hand all that the city offers has been a source of inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think if you love something and appreciate something, it\u2019s essential to spend your time and your resources to keep the reasons why you love it,\u201d he said. \u201cI want people to know how lucky we are to have resources here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Kris Troch, a social studies coordinator for Virginia Beach City Public Schools and one of Roughton\u2019s former teachers, this tremendous passion for the community was the exact reason he was selected for the commission. In fact, it was Troch who nominated Roughton for the appointment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTanner has a strong sense of community and responsibility for the community,\u201d Troch said. \u201cHe respects others and makes meaningful contributions.\u00a0 I felt very strongly that his ability to work with others and his initiative would be an asset to any team he joined&#8230; A critical thinker who is solution-oriented, he is a student who brings passion to his work and respects the community of learners surrounding him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Roughton, being able to serve on the commission has been an education in and of itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome people don\u2019t understand the functions of the city, the way laws are carried out, how services are provided to constituents,\u201d Roughton said. \u201cIt\u2019s cool to understand (those things) at my age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, even the smaller minutia of how to hold a meeting has been exceptionally helpful for Roughton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLearning the whole collaboration thing,\u201d Roughton said. \u201c(It) resonates in any kind of meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Looking toward the future, Roughton has his sights set on attending the University of Virginia, where he would like to pursue a career in business or finance. He added that he still would find a way to stay connected to local government.<\/p>\n<p>However, any direction he ultimately goes, Roughton credits the staff and teachers at Princess Anne High School for encouraging their students to pursue their aspirations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have the ability to cultivate anyone,\u201d Roughton said. \u201cThey believe passion is what carries you \u2013 ultimately \u2013 to success\u2026They are the best teachers in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q&amp;A<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last movie you saw:\u00a0 Best of Me<\/p>\n<p>Favorite Book: The Hermit is a Lonely Hunter<\/p>\n<p>Favorite President: Franklin D.
