That was at least true this week with students at Princess Anne High School.

School division maintenance staff members were working on one of the air conditioning units at the school when a needed part of the return air cover broke. They went to order a replacement part for the unit, and were told the part was no longer produced.

However, the order setback became a learning opportunity for students in Roger Crider’s technology education class.

Students worked directly with the maintenance department to recreate the needed piece and used the school’s 3D printer to “print” the part. They tested the piece to see if the new replacements could withstand the pressure, and they worked perfectly. The 3D printer can print four of the replacement parts at a time.

Check out the results.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-1568" alt="The white piece, left, was the original piece provided by the maintenance department.
