\u201cReady, Set, Kindergarten!\u201d program helps little ones practice riding the bus to school, visiting the cafeteria, cleaning up after mealtime and more.<\/p>\n<p>Piloted three years ago, \u201cReady, Set, Kindergarten!\u201d is now at all eight VBCPS Title I schools that have kindergarten.<\/p>\n<p>For four half-days during the second week of August, up to 15 students participated at eight VBCPS Title I schools that have kindergarten programs.<\/p>\n<p>Designed with care and creativity, the program focuses on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Helping students ease into the transition of leaving home.<\/li>\n<li>Familiarizing them with the rules and procedures at school.<\/li>\n<li>Introducing them to the faces and places that will become an integral part of their kindergarten walking in single file and opening up Pop-Tart packages. School staff also get to know the new students, everything from personalities to food allergies. \u201cReady, Set, Kindergarten!\u201d teacher Kristina Coryell and teacher assistant Mercy Ramos Rodriguez started the first day by greeting each student as they arrived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re done with your breakfast, put your trash in the trash can,\u201d Coryell said with a smile. Teacher-led reading activities, such as \u201cDavid Goes to School\u201d by David Shannon and \u201cButterflies on the First Day of School\u201d by Annie Silvestro, help students with kindergarten readiness skills and social emotional learning.<\/p>\n<p>Ready, Set, Kindergarten! gives students a chance to preview what it will be like to be a kindergarten student in a welcoming and supportive setting. He called it \u2018Play Kindergarten\u2019 and is now counting down until \u2018Real Kindergarten\u2019 starts. He&#8217;s less anxious about making new friends and having new teachers, and is now really excited to return.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Interested?<\/h2>\n<p><em>\u201cReady, Set, Kindergarten!\u201d serves students at several <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vbschools.com\/academics\/title-i\"><em>Title I elementary schools<\/em><\/a><em>. Applications will reopen next year. If your child\u2019s school is a participating Ready, Set, Kindergarten site, you will have the opportunity to apply when you register your child for kindergarten for the 2027\u20132028 school year.
