The class with the most correct scavenger hunt sheets will be awarded extra recess time.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>White Oaks Elementary students went on a U.S. scavenger hunt in April.<\/p>\n<p>They didn\u2019t travel across the county, but through the halls of the school.<\/p>\n<p>With clipboard in hand, third grader China Allen looked at the North Carolina-themed door.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve been there,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Next, she headed to Nebraska and found the answer to the question about where Kool-Aid was invented.<\/p>\n<p>She also learned that Maine was known for lobsters and the state of Michigan is shaped like a mitten.<\/p>\n<p>All students had the opportunity to participate in the scavenger hunt, visiting each of the 50 doors creatively decorated with trivia about one of the 50 states.<\/p>\n<p>School counselors Leah Brown and Karidah Cotten collaborated with art teacher Amber Crunk on the idea as part of \u201cCollege and Career Month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teachers were asked to select a state and decorate their classroom doors with fun facts, including state birds, capitals, geography, careers and colleges, such as the University of Michigan, often called the &#8220;Harvard of the West.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur teachers are always so supportive,\u201d Cotten said. Her son Elias, a first grader, dressed up like a bird scientist for career day.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Crunk\u2019s door featured potatoes and highlighted industries in Idaho including farming, nuclear power and healthcare. Cotten\u2019s Ohio door highlighted manufacturing, agriculture, aviation and more.<\/p>\n<p>Susanna McClure said her second graders were curious about her door decorated in the theme of her home state of New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey wanted to know why there were all these vegetables on the door,\u201d she said.
