Greg Watts, the drummer, was previously the technology support technician at Princess Anne High School and Creeds Elementary School and plans to return to the TST role this summer at North Landing Elementary School.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fifth graders at Red Mill Elementary are learning about sound and light while designing instruments for the local band Radio 80s.<\/p>\n<p>The band created a video introducing themselves and asking students to think about how light and sound play into a band\u2019s performance on stage. (Watch the video on Google <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1hApHozlqjgoThWD8DxpiAzew35du0iEW\/view?usp=sharing\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>To connect real-world sound production with classroom learning, students interviewed lead vocalist Phil Friedman, who is also the school\u2019s instructional technology specialist (ITS).<\/p>\n<p>The lesson idea came from gifted resource teacher Cynthia Housianitis, who shared with Friedman a concept she previously developed with the fifth grade team and the former ITS, using music as the heart of the students\u2019 performance task.<\/p>\n<p>The performance-based assessment (PBA) encourages students to think like real engineers, Housianitis said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re using critical thinking to solve problems musicians face on stage and creative thinking to design instruments that produce sound while interacting with light,\u201d she said. \u201cPartnering with Radio 80s makes the science meaningful because students can see how these ideas apply in the real world as they design, test, and improve their prototypes using scientific evidence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe asked students to design instruments for Radio 80s to use during a performance, incorporating a lighting element so their creations truly shine \u2014 even in a dark stage environment,\u201d Friedman said. \u201cIt\u2019s a great way to bring the curriculum to life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1Omyqc-SFGq8TgWKqTpixLRvGnkAHBEfRwxhvEfb75jM\/edit?usp=sharing\">unit plan<\/a>, students designed and refined prototypes as they learned about the science behind sound production, vibration, energy transfer, and how light is reflected and refracted.<\/p>\n<p>The lessons unfolded over several weeks, with students working through several pages of worksheets while problem solving challenges about light and sound that musicians may face on stage.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14885\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14885\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/26B35F1-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14885\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/26B35F1-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/26B35F1-200x300.jpg 200w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/26B35F1-683x1024.jpg 683w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/26B35F1-768x1152.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/26B35F1-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/26B35F1-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/26B35F1-400x600.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/26B35F1-scaled.jpg 1707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14885\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tyler Nguyen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On instrument-building day, students used a variety of materials. There were shoeboxes, Amazon boxes, toilet paper rolls and recycled plastic containers from home. There were also strings, rubber bands, balloons and various materials that refract, reflect or absorb light waves \u2013 aluminum foil, sequins and plastic crystals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe clock is ticking,\u201d Mrs. Losito said during the exercise. \u201cWe have an hour. Teachers used an oscilloscope to measure whether the instruments were successfully built to make two different sounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like that this is hands-on learning,\u201d Losito said. \u201cStudents are learning, making something and seeing how it applies to the real world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The project has also benefited Radio 80s, Friedman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCollectively, I feel that we all are happy to have the ability to build a bridge with a younger generation by sharing something we have great passion for,\u201d he said. \u201cPersonally, it is incredible to bring a
