\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>Bella Gonzalez-Flores was recently surprised to find out she won a national award for her work as cafeteria manager at New Castle Elementary. More than a dozen colleagues and community members nominated her for the \u201cTyson K-12 Hunger Heroes<\/a>\u201d award.<\/p>\n

Officials from the Tyson company visited New Castle to surprise her as one of a handful of national winners. The prize includes a $5,000 grant and Hunger Hero socks and aprons for the cafeteria staff. And perhaps most fun of all, Gonzalez\u2019s likeness was turned into a caricature Tyson will use to promote Hunger Heroes for the next year.<\/p>\n

Gonzalez-Flores came to the U.S. from Spain 15 years ago and has been working for Virginia Beach Public Schools for the last five years.<\/p>\n

One of her nominations cited her dedication to ensuring every student has access to nutritious meals, unwavering support for our school community, and tireless efforts to foster a welcoming environment.<\/p>\n

This school year, she started a culinary club for fourth and fifth graders, teaching them kitchen safety and introducing them to different cultural foods.<\/p>\n

She makes student birthdays extra special by rolling out the birthday cart, complete with lively music and festive cheer, bringing joy to students on their special day. As a language ambassador, she helps families who do not speak English.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s praised for providing students with samples of new menu items, sparking their curiosity about nutritious foods. When she sees a child who may be having a troubling day, she will get down to their level and talk with them and give them a hug if they need one.<\/p>\n

\u201cBella is a cornerstone of positivity and support in our school community,\u201d said principal Heather Quinn. \u201cEach Friday morning, she runs the coffee cart in the commons for staff, fostering camaraderie and boosting morale among teachers and school personnel. Her kindness and commitment to our school climate make a lasting impact on everyone she encounters.\u201d<\/p>\n
