Some of the Norwegian band members visited with Tallwood students to share information and answer questions.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Students and faculty attended the concert featuring Tallwood\u2019s Wind Ensemble and the prestigious 77-member Army band stationed in Oslo, Norway.<\/p>\n<p>They performed each other\u2019s national anthems together and the famous Norwegian march, \u201cEntry March of the Boyars,\u201d by composer Johan Halvorsen.<\/p>\n<p>Tallwood band director Tim Rossettini said the school looks forward to the annual event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents make connections across the world with the joy of music,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Global Studies and World Languages Coordinator Jessica Windish said the experience was invaluable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is quite monumental for high school students to perform with professional musicians from another country,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Will Ragno and Nathan McCroskey are drum majors for Tallwood\u2019s marching band and part of the Wind Ensemble.<\/p>\n<p>Both said they welcomed the opportunity to meet and work with international musicians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have lots of commonality and little differences,\u201d said Will, a trombone player.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13655\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13655\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/TallwoodTat3-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13655\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/TallwoodTat3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/TallwoodTat3-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/TallwoodTat3-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/TallwoodTat3-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/TallwoodTat3-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/TallwoodTat3-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/TallwoodTat3-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13655\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members of His Majesty the King\u2019s Guard from Norway not only performed with the school\u2019s Wind Ensemble but visited the Tallwood band room to talk with students. Solvang Vang and privates Tidemann Teigre, Karoline Hilsen and Marie Minerva Bordi.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nathan has performed with the visiting military bands for several years, including the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy in 2024. \u00a0The senior played the euphonium \u2013 a mini tuba \u2013 in this year\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great learning to play pieces from other countries although it can be challenging,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Windish said the opportunity to exchange ideas and have conversations with those from different cultures is an important part of the day, too.<\/p>\n<p>Before the concert began, several of the Norway bandmembers shared information and answered questions.<\/p>\n<p>Their answers to \u201cHow do you spend your weekends?\u201d included fishing, walks in the mountains and relaxing with friends.<\/p>\n<p>Students learned that English is a required language in Norway beginning in the second grade and that the country\u2019s population is much smaller compared to Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman Jay Goff asked if they were musicians or members of the military.\u00a0 The answer was \u201cboth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Upon finishing secondary education, Norwegian citizens are required to serve in the military for about a year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was a little surprised that you could be a musician in the military,\u201d Jay said.<\/p>\n<p>Privates Marie Minerva Bordi, Karoline Hilsen and Tidemann Teigre were asked what they like about America.<\/p>\n<p>Their answers included \u201cthe Tattoo, of course,\u201d \u201cthe warm weather,\u201d \u201cmeeting other musicians\u201d and \u201cthe opportunity to perform.\u201d\u00a0 They also mentioned their fondness for local bagels.<\/p>\n<p>When asked why they wanted to be part of a military band, responses centered around their love for playing music.<\/p>\n<p>Marie \u2013 who plays the flute \u2013 said it had always been her goal to play in the King\u2019s band.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI might as well do something I love,\u201d said Karoline, a French horn player.<\/p>\n<p>Tidemann, a tuba player, said he values the opportunity to play with fellow musicians who share his passion.<\/p>\n<p>The Virginia Arts Festival produces the Virginia International Tattoo at Norfolk Scope.
