students and their families returned to school for a camping-themed evening of learning fun during AVID Literacy Night.<\/p>\n<p>AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an elective course, however the program\u2019s strategies to improve organizational, goal setting and reading and writing skills are incorporated throughout the entire school.<\/p>\n<p>Parents had the chance to see what it was all about.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 20 interactive activities were spread throughout the hallways and several classrooms, while the school\u2019s annual book fair took place in the library.<\/p>\n<p>Sixth grader Mila Williams\u2019 mother, Shelley Schudel, was glad she attended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is great for me to learn the different steps to things such as writing essays and being organized,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Mila tried out a unique machine on display at the creative writing club\u2019s \u201ccampsite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a typewriter,\u201d explained Avery Miller. \u201cA lot of people have never seen one in person before.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13440\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13440\" style=\"width: 300px\" school\u2019s camping-themed AVID Literacy Night. From left, members Jenavieve Brimmer, Drew Denault, Nicole Dellaquila, Lilleigh Butera, Avery Miller.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The eighth grader and fellow club members created an interactive display featuring a camp stove with baked beans and a game to match quotes with popular books, such as \u201cOh, the Places You\u2019ll Go,\u201d by Dr. Suess.<\/p>\n<p>They also promoted their school\u2019s blog, the \u201cTide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mila\u2019s prize: candy and a stamp on her AVID Literacy Night passport.<\/p>\n<p>Nearby, students spun a wheel to answer a math question. Me llamo Avery,\u201d exclaimed the eighth grader. She and Claire Chamberlin guided students as they read sentences in Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>Eighth graders Ava McHugh and Ryan Howard asked Zayden Locke to touch some Oobleck and guess if it was a solid or a liquid.<\/p>\n<p>He wasn\u2019t sure. They explained that the gooey mixture of cornstarch and water was an example of a non-Newtonian fluid, such as ketchup, toothpaste and quicksand.<\/p>\n<p>Zayden\u2019s mother, Teri Wales, said she was glad her son wanted to attend the literacy night. \u201cIt\u2019s fun to expose them to science and interesting ways to look at things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Event organizer Suzanne Bruehl is the Great Neck Middle literacy coach.
