\"\"<\/a>English teacher Lalisha Fitchett of Brandon Middle School is a the VBCPS citywide Teacher of the Year.<\/p>\n

Making a lasting impact on students\u2019 character and attitudes is why she chose to be an educator.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u201cI teach because I believe in creating a positive, supportive environment where students can grow beyond academics,\u201d said Fitchett, who teaches seventh grade.<\/p>\n

She emphasizes respect, consistency and positive behavior to help students feel secure, motivated and understood.<\/p>\n

Fitchett began her teaching career in 2000 and has been part of the Brandon Middle faculty for the past seven years.<\/p>\n

Principal Kenneth Vaughan said Fitchett inspires others.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer boundless energy, uplifting spirit and unwavering dedication to putting students first make her a true champion for our school and community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Vaughan said Fitchett is a \u201ccollaborative team player\u201d who adapts instructional practices to meet the diverse needs of students. She has taught multiple grade levels and subjects.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer ability to build strong connections with students, regardless of age or subject matter, is a testament to her passion for education and her genuine care for student success,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Fitchett is a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and has served as president, vice president and graduate advisor for the organization. She is currently a Virginia High School League cheerleading official and member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Women Educators Society.<\/p>\n

As the school\u2019s head cheerleading coach, she led the team to a city championship last year.<\/p>\n

Currently she is the English 7 department chair, yearbook sponsor, and part of the school\u2019s Instructional Leadership Team and AVID site team. She mentors new teachers and is also a member of Brandon Middle\u2019s Grief Sensitive Initiative and professional learning community (PLC) lead for her English team.<\/p>\n

She has attended numerous professional development activities, including \u201cInspiring Student Learning in Social Studies\u201d and has been \u201cTagged by the Superintendent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fitchett was presented several \u201cI Make a Difference\u201d awards, given to teachers who make a difference in the lives of their students. And during last year\u2019s teacher appreciation week, she was recognized by parents and students as a \u201cVB Hero.\u201d<\/p>\n

She taught Amy Baddi\u2019s son at Brandon Middle.<\/p>\n

Baddi said Fitchett engages students with her high energy and infectious personality and inspires academic excellence through positivity.<\/p>\n

Fitchett instilled confidence that helped Baddi\u2019s son thrive throughout middle school and succeed at the Global Studies & World Languages Academy at Tallwood High School.<\/p>\n

\u201cMs. Fitchett can bring excitement to lessons that many students find boring,\u201d Baddi said.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe works with parents to help create the kind, authentic, confident and happy children our society needs.\u201d<\/p>\n
