\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>English teacher Chessie Scott recently worked with First Colonial High School\u2019s media specialist and literacy coach to engage students in a service-learning project.<\/p>\n

The group of teachers met with the students weekly to find a community partner they were passionate about helping. Students researched, planned and executed a task to help an organization.<\/p>\n

One group worked with Lynnhaven River Now to sew re-useable bags out of recycled fabric. Karen Worrall, a volunteer with the environmental group, spoke to the students about the dangers of microplastics in our local waters and the importance of using re-useable bags.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The First Colonial students sewed the bags and wanted to donate them to students at an elementary school to teach them about the importance of sustainability. They made an informational video for the elementary students and printed coloring pages to include in the bags.<\/p>\n

The bags were delivered to students at Seatack Elementary \u2013 An Achievable Dream Academy. The elementary students were excited to receive the bags, and the high school students learned so much through this experience.<\/p>\n

Other First Colonial staff members included in the project were Ashley Mihelic, Courtney Porter and Jennifer Stubbe.<\/p>\n
