Fifth-grade students from Malibu Elementary had the opportunity to visit the Virginia Beach Technical and Career Education Center for the second year in a row. The trip was a culminating activity to their Electricity Unit. Robert Shanks, trade and industrial teacher for the center, and his afternoon Electricity students and former students worked with teachers and students.
Shanks guided the class, and students were treated to lunch and then taken through a timeline of the “history of electricity” and its impact on our society. Shanks also touched upon electrical safety.
Finally, the students made a lamp with the help of the tech students. The materials for the project were donated by Shanks. Anthony Pawlowski’s carpentry students at the Tech Center made the wooden lamps and bases. As the fifth-grade students were leaving, Shanks posed a math question and writing prompt for the students to complete back in the classroom.
Not only did the experience reinforce concepts learned, but it also helped students make connections to real world applications.
Looks like it was an awesome experience, makes me want to take the class!! And everybody is smiling!!!
