Lloyd Whitehurst is the true definition of resilience and humility at Kempsville Middle School.
The way the special education teacher’s assistant approaches and carries out his responsibilities each day is truly exemplary, says his principal, Dr. Dawn Kramer.
And his dedication, patience and consistency do not go unnoticed by students.
“Students genuinely love him and feel safe and comfortable in his presence, which speaks volumes about the positive impact he has on their lives,” Kramer said.
Recently, Whitehurst became Superman. When Sixth grader Riley Lee began choking in the cafeteria, he responded quickly, calmly and confidently, performing the Heimlich maneuver and helping the student through a frightening emergency.
Riley isn’t in one of Whitehurst’s classes but is grateful all the same, Kramer said.
“He is a wonderful example of what it means to lead with kindness, compassion, and a strong work ethic,” Kramer said. “Mr. Whitehurst’s relationships with students are built through kindness, patience, and a wonderful sense of humor.”
One of his students affectionally calls him “Tie Guy” (because he often wears a tie) and teases him a bit, but it’s all in fun. Whitehurst simply smiles, jokes along with the student, and makes him feel seen and valued.
Whitehurst received the school’s “Heart of the Brave” award for the kindness, commitment, humor, and positive presence he brings every day.
“His actions showed not only courage and composure under pressure, but also the deep care he has for our students,” Kramer said.
