Earlier this year, Virginia Beach’s Friendship City, Olongapo City, Philippines, recently suffered a devastating flood with reports of at least 18 dead and more than $2 billion worth of damage done to the city.
The loss of personal possessions combined with the outbreak of disease in the area put the city at greater risk. Shoes can help to prevent the spread of infections and diseases. Students at Tallwood High School heard the request for help and immediately began to collect flip-flops to send to students in Olongapo City.
The campaign dubbed, “Soles for Souls” brought in 189 pairs of flip-flops, which were given to the The Travel Outlet and the Olongapo Association of Hampton Roads to pass on to those suffering from the flood.
Other schools across the district have also been pitching in. For example, Kempsville High School’s Leadership Skills class raised $1,000 to send to the Philippines for relief work.
